Meet a Striver: Risk, Claims, and OS&D Manager
Strive is made up of people from a variety of backgrounds that share a common goal - to deliver our customer's business.
Meet Sean, who has been with Strive since 2005. He is our Risk, Claims, and OS&D Manager who works hard to keep our customers and their freight safe.
Outside of Strive, Sean’s number one priority is his family. He loves spending time with his three year old twins and six year old daughter. Sean is also in school at Northeastern, working towards an Interdisciplinary degree, and somehow still makes time for his other passion: music. Sean is in one band already—cool funk and neo-soul—and is organizing a second band as we speak. He plans on writing and recording music with both of them this year.
How did you first learn about Strive?
I first learned of Strive Logistics in the summer of 2005 while speaking to (Strive Operations rep) Gilly. I also knew Jon Provus (General Manager and Partner at Strive) from junior high and waterski and softball competitions up in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.
What ultimately led you to accept your position here?
I knew Strive was the right fit the second I walked into the office. Everyone was wearing shorts and t-shirts, music and the Cubs game were on, and two dogs were running around the office.
What do you like most about your job?
Back in 2005, Strive was a brand new company and I started off as a carrier sales rep with no training. I was just thrown into the mix and learned everything through hands-on experience. The environment was intense, but the managers helped push me to the point where I was quadrupling my production. Eventually I became a manager and started training new employees at Strive. I have since become the head of the Risk, Claims & OS&D Department.
I love that I’ve built up my department and am the first line of defense when it comes to helping to resolve some of the most challenging and complicated problems in our industry. I love the fact that I’m in an environment where I can choose to listen to my music to set the tone of my day.
Another thing I really love about Strive is that they work with their employees to figure out where they fit. It really gives you an opportunity to flourish. I feel at home in my current position and love that I’ve been given the freedom to really build and shape my career.
How has Strive helped you in your career development?
Strive has helped me build confidence in myself. Just like George Mcfly said, “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.” I started working for Strive not even knowing what the word logistics meant, but since then I’ve won 4 Top Gun awards (an internal award celebrating the best of the best at Strive) in a row. My success here has inspired me to go back to school, proudly earn a 4.0, and join the honors program. I’m also in the middle of putting together a more advanced safety department by utilizing the technology in LoadRunner®. Our department is always monitoring the carriers we use to help insulate our customers from risk.
What advice do you have for prospective Strive candidates?
You need to be able to multi-task, think outside of the box, and turn on your inner beast-mode. Working hard is great for the company, great for development, and makes the days go by really fast.
What are 3 words to describe Strive?
Family, commitment, and success.
How would you describe the culture at Strive?
The culture at Strive is vibrant. We are young company, entrepreneurial, and growing fast. The vibe here is laid-back and the dress code is relaxed. Through the years I’ve seen some pretty awesome contests including eating, pushup, fundraiser, biggest loser, costume, and more. It’s so unique and different from corporate America. Strive definitely has a lot of personality.
